About
My name is Bertalan Meskó. I’m a medical student at the University of Debrecen, Hungary (5th year of the 6). Here is my LinkedIn profile.
I plan to become a clinical geneticist specialized in personalized genomics. I believe that the future of medicine belongs to this field.
On this blog, my aim is to make medicine, genetics more readable even for those who are not too interested in them. That’s why I mostly write about genetic testing, personalized genetics, the most important news of clinical genetics and, of course, popular medicine.
I also work on the relationship between web 2.0 and medicine. I try to provide useful content; tools and services that could ease the work of physicians, medical students, nurses or medical librarians.
I have already given presentations at
- Yale University
- the hospital of Greenwich
- the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference in Long Beach (2008 January)
- at dozens of Hungarian clinics and departments.
I maintain two blog carnivals:
- Gene Genie: the carnival of genes and gene-related diseases
- Medicine 2.0: the carnival of web 2.0 and medicine
My Hungarian medical blog can be found here: mediq.blog.hu
I’ll never forget the works of Stanislaw Lem, I like listening to Ray Charles and consider Isaac Newton as an idol.
If you’d like to contact me,
- just drop me a line: berci.mesko [at] gmail.com
- or Skype me (ncurse)
- or follow me on Twitter!

Godd luck to your blog. Cheers, Attila.
sorry, good.
Thank you! I’m trying…
But the English scientific blog community is of course much bigger than the Hungarian one.
Then I wish I were literate in Hungarian!
Welcome to the blogosphere.
Don’t think that. If you’re alone in a community, it’s not so exciting…
Welcome to the medical blogsphere and Best Regards from Mexico.
So, are you going to be a genetist?
Thank you!
Yes, I plan to become a clinical geneticist. Now, I work on Fragile X syndrome. In this blog, I plan to post interviews with famous geneticists…
Hi,
I saw your link at easternblot.net
I want to let you know about an other web site for science related cartoons…I like the cartoons there.
web address is

Thank you
Pat
Thanks for the link, I’ll write a post about it as I loved their cartoons.
Hey, your blog is getting more and more successful man! I’m sure that Scienceblogs.com will come knocking on your door quite soon.
Thank you!
But according to the blog stats, I don’t feel the same. On Saturday, Scienceroll will be one month old and I’ll publish my first month blog stat diagram. There is a spectacular oscillation.
BTW, it would be really great.

Thanks!

Hello Dr. Mesko,
I know you are a 4th year med student, but, you will have the doctor designation shortly. Congratulations.
I am a new medical blogger (very different site and goals from yours) and I have been looking through the medical blogging community to see what other people are doing.
I really like your site and plan to refer to it periodically. You have great articles.
Would you consider adding me to your list of blogs?
I have your blog in my list already.
Thank you,
Rima Bishara, MD
OK, I already said it but this screen popped up again.
So, hello, again.
Rima Bishara
Dear Dr. Bishara,
Yes, we have different aimes, but I like your posts, so of course, I added you to my blogroll. By the way, I’m as new to the medical blogosphere as you. Keep up this good work… PS: you have plenty of sponsors. Wow!
I can’t leave a message on your site…
Dr. Mesko,
Thank you for adding me to your blog roll.
I apologize for the difficulty finding a way to comment.
You can use the “Add Comment” feature at the end of each entry or you can use the email I posted with my comment (not for public viewing, of course).
I’ll keep checking your work.
R. Bishara, MD

Nice blog. Keep up the good work
Thank you Venus, you create interesting posts.
Hi Bertalan,
I am a copywriter, journalist and ad blogger - far from a medicine man, but just want to say I loved your blog!
farrukh
Dear farrukh,
it’s far the best to hear that from a journalist, not a medicine man. I write for you, not just for specialists.
Bertalan, I have read 10 posts, will be back for more. Really nice blog, posts that excite and intrigue me.
Dear Miriam, I left a comment on your page.
Subject: Protect Consumers from Dishonest Online Pharmacies
As a blogger on health and medicine, you may be interested in a new article entitled “Guide to Buying Prescription Medicines (Meds) Online”, posted by Medicine Online (www.meds.com).
The article offers clear-cut instructions to help consumers protect themselves from dishonest online pharmacies and to teach consumers how to avoid buying counterfeit pills.
The new article is located at http://www.meds.com/onlinemeds.html

Bertalan, thanks! I finally got rid of my habit to think that comments are good. In fact it doesn’t really matter. I just love blogging and will keep doing it.
hi Bertalan.. I’m Huda Toriq. I’m like you… a 4th year medical student.. but hasn’t yet done a lot of things like you did.. thanks for the inspiration.. I’ve added your blog in my blogroll.. But you might won’t understand anything in my blog-as a people who live in a country that don’t use English even as a second language.. I write my all my post in my language - Indonesian.
Maybe some time or soon I’ll translate it also in English. I’ts nice to know you..
Thank you, Huda! I should speak Indonesian…
Anyway, I started to blog in Hungarian first then after some time, I changed to English. So don’t worry. Maybe once you’ll change too.
Hi, Bertalan!
I found your marvellous site today, and a lot of other very interesting sites associated with it.
I have a web site where a computer model of cell proliferation in living tissue is published (www.cell-division-program.com). The program was made by my colleague with the theoretical background of my old articles. It is a program that naturally could not be fitted in a scientific journal. Besides, I don’t work. (A note about me exists on Wiki, there is also my personal story at http://ca.geocities.com/uoftfraud/)
Now, I wonder if you could popularize this cell-division-program site. Since it is not in a journal, people don’t know it. I think it must be very interesting to your readers, as it is the first work explaining how the structures of the tissues are formed and how cells are replaced by new ones.
Just found your site. Will be stopping by again.
You have quite a refreshing outlook into genetics and medicine!
Michael: I sent you an e-mail.
Bongi and meow: These kind words always help me to move on.
Szia, Bertalan,
Kedves Csaba!
Orvostól nem kaptam még ilyen kedves visszajelzést. Köszönöm szépen és próbálkozom megtalálni.
Berci
Awesome site, dude. Respect.
(Csak így tovább!)
Köszönöm!
Just want to drop by and say what a great site this is! I will definitely be coming back often and check on you posts, very interesting indeed.
Thank you!
What is the difference between DirectScience.info and Wikipedia for example? I’m curious about it as your site seems to be interesting.
Thanks. Well, when I started my site, I did not really know about Wikipedia. I thought of just creating a reference site for myself at first. Now that Wikipedia is popular, my site seems redundant. I am hoping now that I can write more extensive articles and I am in the process of adding new features (such as animation and java applets, and protocols) that are not available in Wikipedia. Though Wikipedia is definitely better in many ways!
thanks for your visit to my blog…
nice blog here buddy..
Too much of genetics…. i felt dizzy at first..
Good job. Love your site. Keep up the good work!
nice work, u ll enjoy my blog too

Hi B.: I’m sorry to bother you – I know you are super busy, but I bumped into a bit of science I don’t quite understand in researching writing a post over at Healthline today & I was wondering if you, or someone you know, has time to post a response & explain what exactly
commercialize fully human antibodies for autoimmune diseases means?

I don’t think we should be scared but I’m not your man on the subject. Anyway, I know someone who could tell you more.

Ulrik, thank you so much!
It takes 2-3 hours a day and as I usually work at night, it doesn’t take time from studying and my lectures. I hate sleeping so it’s easier like that.

I’m following a real-time blog which is tracking an outbreak of a global pandemic. http://www.dominieschronicle.blogspot.com
I think it’s a great example of how web 2.0 can help us to explore medical scenarios. As a leader in the field of the use of the web 2.0 and medicine I’d be interested in your opinion and whether or not you think such innovation has any merit..
Hi, I’m Nico. You have great blog-I’m just surprised if you still on medical student’s. Hope you want to link exchange with may blog at : http://poundmed.com
thanx before.
Donna, thank you for the link! I should write about them!
Nico, of course, welcome on board!
Hi Bertalan, I find your blog really amazing.
I am Ana, from Belgrade, and I am information specialist at Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, that is a great blog. As I am NOT medical staff , but phylologyst , I try to understand what really means PGP , personalized medicine. As I see it is only focused to genes and PGP? I will post on my blogthe information about you and your work ( blog ) to my researchers.
I know it will be interesting for them.
Ana, thank you for the encouragement! It means a lot to me. In Central-Europe, it’s not so easy to promote these new tools in medicine.
Anyway, personalized genetics is somewhere between genetics and preventive medicine. It not only focuses on genes, but the whole genome of a person. Check out the Gene Genie carnival (genegenie.wordpress.com) for more.
I wish you the best!
I already checked Gene Genie carnival and informed our researchers about your blog http://ncrcbiblioteka.blogspot.com (it is in serbian language)
The latest thing I know that we are doing is preventive of thyroid cancer by gene prevention. ( high incidence of thyroid cancer)
But we do for years on BRCA1 and BRCA2, for breast cancer.
I am sure your site will help to many of our medical specialists.
And your site is also on Guus van den Brekel’s blog http://digicmb.blogspot.com/ coordinator of electronic’ services in Univesity of Groningen. ( i saw it few days ago)

Hey Ali! Thank you for dropping by!
Hi! I’m a med student too, from Indonesia. Nice blog you’ve got!
Nice site. My blog began on blogger as a simplification of medical studies, but it didn’t fare well so I moved it here and threw in other topics. Almost all of my health articles are in the archives.
We had the same basic premise–it is a good one.
News agencies are not good at interpreting studies–of any kind
