Woman swallows spoon by accident

It is unbelievable. How the hell can someone swallow a spoon? The Metro.co.uk article says that the 26-year-old Sydney woman gulped down the implement during a laughing fit.

Quick poll: do you usually laugh with a spoon in your mouth?

The woman was placed under general anaesthetic and it took doctors 90 minutes to ease the piece of cutlery out of her throat and mouth.

The technique used by Bedholm and Lee involved using snares to lasso either end of the spoon and pull it upright to it lined up with her oesophagus.

She was lucky this time…

It can happen. I had a patient who swallowed a fork, and the explanation was logical – had a noodle on the end of it and put her head all the way back to try and get it. That made a straight shot down her esopagus – she lost her grip on the fork and down it went.

She was alert, oriented and not intoxicated! The medics thought she was nuts. The xray proved she wasn’t.

  5. Oh come on, don’t be so critical. Once you’re in practice you’ll see all sorts of things.

Your quick poll is flawed. It is not necessary for most people to usually laugh with a spoon in their mouths or even for a few people to usually laugh with a spoon. Given the billions of people who eat with spoons and decades and centuries, you will find a portion of people who found something amusing while they were eating and had a spoon in their mouths.

Interesting, yes. Amusing, yes. Memorable, yes. But unbelievable or ridiculous? Not at all.
